Gilbert E. Holt, Sr. 1949-2011 R.I.P.

Little League regulars were saddened Tuesday morning with the announcement of the death of Gilbert E. Holt, Sr. (62) of Lewes, Delaware.

A native of Milford, Gilbert started his association with the Little League in the late 1950's, when he played catcher on various boy's teams in lower Delaware.

His association with our youth baseball program returned in 1974 when he coached his daughter Gloria, serving as coach, manager, and eventually President of the Lewes Little League, a post he held for almost 20 years. His sons Gilbert, Jr. and Geoffrey also played for Lewes teams, with Gilbert Jr. still active in that organization.

As President, he is credited as being one of the board members who worked to bring Girl's Softball into the Lewes Little League. The T-Ball field at the Lewes Little League park is named in his honor.

In 1994, when Delaware District 3 was formed in Sussex County, Holt was one of the first members of the District staff, a position he held up until his death, serving in various county-wide league support positions, and most recently had served as the Chairman of the Little League Senior Softball World Series committee.

Fans of the World Series remember Gilbert as the big guy in the golf cart, the man who knew who to contact to get things done during the week long event.

Many Little League fans didn't know that he also was an original member of the annual Punkin' Chunkin' event committee, coordinating security along with being one of the original corporation's members. He also had been the Chairman of the annual Old Fashioned 4th of July on 2nd Street celebration in Lewes and was often seen dressed as one of Santa Clause's representatives in Lewes.

Membership in other service organizations include being an honorary member of the Lewes Volunteer Fire Department and member and past president of the Lewes Lions Club.

Gilbert E. Holt worked for the City of Lewes for 40 years, and had retired last February. He is survived by 3 children with his deceased wife, Josephine; Gilbert Jr, Geoffrey and Gloria, all of whom played in the Little League.

Gilbert was buried Tuesday under cloudy skies at Bethel Methodist Cemetery, Lewes with a full escort from the Lewes Fire Company and his many friends. May he rest in peace.

Here's Dennis Forney's article from the Cape Gazette about Gilbert

So you Want Statistics....
The top Batters', Pitchers' and Catchers' statistics can be found on the Statistics page - just click the button on the left.

These are compiled from all of the game records, but we've limited the players to those who had at least 9 At Bats, 9 Innings Pitched or 9 Innings Caught.

Individual Team Statistics can be found on each team's Roster Page - its the ".pdf" file underneath the team picture. Each team's games are also listed on the printouts - the Full Scorebook and Box Score can be found on the individual Game Pages, reached through the Schedule.

The Computer Book is a copy of the Official Score Book kept in the pressbox each game. They reflect the official rulings of the scorekeeper for each game and cannot be changed, but any errors in substitutions should be reported to the webmaster as soon as possible.

Thanks to everyone who kept the books during the games - You can sit and just watch the game, or you can keep score. These people sacrificed watching some great games to make sure they were reported correctly.

Laurel Wins First Championship
Regan and Logan Green combine in a 4 Hitter (Logan started and pitched 3 inning of No Hit ball) to beat Latin America 2-0.

How Do They Get All That Stuff on the Web Site?
Lots of Laptops, a Verizon Hot Spot, a Linksys WiFi Router and help from Mediacom Cable.

All of the scoring at the Senior Softball World Series is done on laptops mirroring the paper and pencil official scorebook. The Senior Softball World Series scoring is done on the Score-it Softward package which produces the box scores, line scores and statistics.

The software runs on several Laptops, all loaned to the World Series by the Laptop Shop and connect to the internet using the wifi router or the Verizon Hot Spot.

The webcasts from BroadcastSport.Net use a combination of air cards and the in park wi-fi.

In addition we have a reporter at each game, updating the web site in real time with the Line Scores and a certain amount of information on the play in the game. All of the website software was developed for the World Series by At the Beach Enterprises who is also the host.

It takes at least 4 people to work on each game, but every year we try to set a new standard for tournament coverage and every year we think it gets better, and better.

Hope you enjoy it.

6 down, 4 to Go!
We're only 5 days away from the start of the 2011 Little League Senior Softball World Series, and the Committee is still waiting for the end of four regional tournaments to fill out the field.

Earlier in June, the International Little League Association of Manila, Philippines was the first team to qualify, followed quickly by the Emelia Little League from Italy and the ASOFEM Little League of Maunabo, Puerto Rico.

Last weekend, the Laurel Little League earned their spot as the Host team, Canada announced their entry as the District 5 All Stars from Windsor, Ontario, and the District 11 All Star Team from South Bend won the Central Regional.

The remainder of the teams should be announced this week; The Southwest winner will be chosen Tuesday, August 2nd, West and Southeast have their final games Wednesday, August 3rd, and the Eastern Regional will end on Thursday August 4th.

The Emelia Little League will be making their first trip to Roxana as the Europe-Middle East - Africa representative. They beat the team from Ramstein, Germany for the EMEA title back in July. The team from Manila, Philippines is also making their first trip.

Always tough competitors, the District 11 All Stars from South Bend has been to Roxana for the last 3 years.

The ASOFEM Little League (Latin America) has also been here before, and won their first Senior Softball Title in 2008.

The Laurel Little League team is making its 7th appearance as Host.

The games start on Sunday, August 7 with four games, at 5:30 and 8:00 PM. Opening Ceremonies for the tournament are Sunday at 3:30 PM.

Pat Knight Games At the Series
Once again, the District 3 (Sussex County) Softball Pat Knight games will be played at the 2011 World Series.

Last year, the Pat Knight girls attended opening ceremonies, the welcome party, and participated in other events surrounding the series at Roxana.

This year, District 3 Girl's Softball teams are again invited to participate, and more interest in the Pat Knight program has been seen.

The 2011 Little League Senior Softball World Series (with the Pat Knight Softball tournament) will be held at Lower Sussex Little League, August 7-13, 2011

How good is the Competition - 4
Every year we try to highlight some of the things the Alums of the Little League Senior Softball World Series do after they play down in Roxana.

This year, as you look at the photograph of the team from Delaware Tech's Owen's Campus, you'll the names of several of the ladies who have represented the District 3 Little League as Hosts of the World Series over the past few years.

This year the Lady Roadrunners didn't get as far as they hoped, but every year, the World Series has another team full of future all stars playing - from 10 different parts of the US and the World!
